International Languages Week

James Hargest College 2008

We celebrated the various languages taught at James Hargest College throughout Languages’ Week.  Monday August 18th was Japanese Day.

We held activities down at the Junior Campus for the Year 7 & 8 students with the help of our senior students of Japanese.  There was a 3 question quiz in the roll call notices for the students to answer and a lucky winner won a small prize.  Then in the lunch hour the students could choose to do any of the following:

  1. Watch the video of “Big Bird in Japan”
  2. Make origami sumo wrestlers followed by a sumo tournament
  3. Eat sushi

The sushi was purchased from a local restaurant for $1 a piece. However we used our Sasakawa Fellowship Fund for Japanese Language ILW grant to subsidise it.  Thus it only cost the students 50 cents each.  This allowed a lot more students to be able to buy it, than otherwise would have been able to.

The senior campus students (Year 9-13) had chopstick races, to improve their chopstick skills and also had the opportunity to purchase sushi at the subsidised rate.

Thanks very much to the Sasakawa Fellowship Fund for Japanese Language for their wonderful support.
