National Website for Teachers and Students of Japanese

Under contract to the Sasakawa Fellowship Fund for Japanese Language Education, Ms Janis Maidment of Howick College developed two national websites which went on-line in 2003 - one for teachers of Japanese, a second for students of Japanese. Both sites relate directly to the New Zealand curriculum in Japanese. These websites are now managed by the NZAJLT Executive and other volunteers who teach Japanese in New Zealand schools.

The students' website is online (http://www.japanese.ac.nz) and is accessible by students from home or school. It includes:
• information on setting up your computer to read Japanese;
• photo essays from Japanese students;
• carefully chosen and maintained links;
• up-to-date news;
• on-line dictionaries;
• a selection of New Zealand syllabus specific language games;
• a section on Japanese life and culture;
• a facility for communicating with students in Japan.

The password-protected teachers' site includes:

• announcements regarding Japanese teaching in New Zealand;
• ICT and PD information
• a central bank of resources to create internal exams and tests,
• a bank of previous year's exam papers and examiners reports,
• a facility to share resources, in specific year levels;
• a 'Relief Folder' for use by relief teachers,
• Kiwi Tsunami information
• DEAI resources
• A link to the Japan Foundation website and resources;
• Further links to Japanese Language Advisors, Related Organisation and Bookshops
• a 'Japan Trip Folder' with information for teachers planning school trips to Japan.
• a database of teachers of Japanese who are members of the NZAJLT.

Teachers who are members of NZAJLT have automatic access to the Teachers’ site when a yearly per-institution subscription is paid. The subscription form is available on the Student Site so that anyone can access it.
