Scholarships for Undergraduate Students in Japan on a University Exchange Programme

Most New Zealand Universities have formal exchange agreements with Japanese universities under which undergraduate students spend up to a year in Japan and have their study credited to their New Zealand qualification. This is an increasingly expensive exercise for New Zealand students and the scholarships available from Japan are less and less accessible.

The Sasakawa Exchange in Japan scholarships are for students travelling to Japan under one of these formal agreements, who have not been awarded a JASSO (formerly AIEJ) or similar scholarship.

There will be two rounds annually to accommodate the different, most common, departure dates of April and October. The size of the scholarship awarded to successful applicants will depend on the strength of their application, the length of their exchange and the level of other funding they have secured.

Applications close 28 February for Round 1 (departure in April) and 31 August for Round 2 (departure in October).
